Site Assessment & Consultation

We walk the site, assess slope, soil type, drainage patterns and existing structures. We discuss your goals, material preferences and how the stonework fits the broader landscape plan.

Design & Material Selection

Wall height, batter, material choice - armour stone, natural stone, interlocking block or flagstone - and drainage strategy are all confirmed before any ground is broken.

Excavation & Base Prep

Proper excavation depth, compacted granular base and drainage aggregate are installed first. This is the work that determines whether a wall lasts 5 years or 25 years.

Wall & Stonework Construction

Courses are laid with attention to batter, tie-backs where required, and consistent joint spacing. Steps, coping and accent stonework are integrated as the build progresses.

Drainage & Backfill

Drainage pipe, filter fabric and clean backfill are installed behind the wall to manage hydrostatic pressure - the most common cause of premature wall failure.

Final Grading & Cleanup

Surrounding grades are restored, topsoil is placed, and the site is left clean. We review the finished work with you before closing out the project.

What types of retaining walls do you build?

We build armour stone walls, natural stone walls, interlocking segmental block walls and flagstone feature walls. The right choice depends on wall height, soil conditions, drainage requirements and the visual direction of your landscape design.

How do you prevent a retaining wall from failing?

Most wall failures come from poor drainage and inadequate base preparation. We install compacted granular base, drainage aggregate behind the wall, filter fabric and drainage pipe where required. Jovian was on site every day on our Vaughan project to make sure the pre-work was done right - that is the standard we hold on every job.

Can you build stone steps as part of a retaining wall project?

Yes. Steps are often integrated directly into retaining wall systems. We can build natural stone steps, armour stone steps or interlocking steps that match the wall material and the overall landscape design. Steps are planned for safe rise-and-run proportions and proper drainage.

What is coping and where is it used?

Coping is the cap or edge finish applied to the top of a wall, pool surround, raised planter or patio border. It provides a clean finished edge, protects the structure below from water infiltration and adds a polished visual detail. We use natural stone, cut stone and matching interlocking coping depending on the application.

Do you handle retaining walls as part of a full landscape build?

Yes. Retaining walls and stonework are a core part of our landscape construction and design-build work. Walls, steps, patios, grading and drainage are all planned together so the finished yard works as a complete system rather than a collection of separate elements.

How long does a retaining wall project take?

Timeline depends on wall length, height, material and site access. A straightforward armour stone wall may take a few days. A multi-tiered system with steps, drainage and surrounding landscape work is a longer project. We scope each job individually and give you a realistic timeline before work begins.
